Music has power over our lives. When we listen to music, it helps to lift our spirits, it provides us with great feelings of relief, and we have some tunes to sing along to when we want. The newest genre of music today is rap music. Its origins do not go far back but only some time in the 60s and 70s in New York. This relatively new music genre is now the most popular genre today. This type of music features a high rate of beats per minutes. It also has an equally fast manner of speech. Rhyming and wordplay is used in rap and this makes it a really interesting type of music. There are many popular rappers today. The offshoots of this type of music include gangster rap, mumble rap, dirty rap and more.
The most popular genre for many years was rock music, long before rap become very popular. The sounds and rhythms of African music is the origins of rock music. The signature sound of rock music in the 50s and 60s were popularized by Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry who used elements of blues, soul, and gospel music. The signature sound of rock music today, however, has changed from being centered on drums to being driven by guitar.
Pop or popular music is a combination of styles and genres which are designed to be fun, upbeat and palatable to a wider audience. Most pop songs are short, repetitive, and has a chorus.
One of the most misunderstood music genre today is heavy metal. For many, there is nothing in it but loud, angry noise. However, this genre actually has its roots in blues and jazz music. The tritone known as the devil’s chord is used by these musicians to create a darker, heavier sound. This music genre offers something for listeners of every type of music. There is heavy metal that includes scary theatrical coatings characteristic of disco and pop music. Others incorporate jazz fusion, classical, and rock elements into their style of metal.
Punk is the opposite of pop and rock. It is passionate guitar-driven music with fast beats per minute. It is intentionally off-putting and deliberately counter culture.
